Beautiful, relaxing, and great hosts!

We stayed at Open Cross Ranch in the Homestead House for a bachelorette weekend. There were 8 girls total, and it was perfect. We enjoyed the wineries during the day, and then used the very well-stocked kitchen to make a big, delicious dinner. We ate outside under the stars (and the great built-in ramada with beautiful lighting), and then Mac came out and lit us a fire. We stayed up late, enjoying the adorable house and playing games. The next day we enjoyed the delicious eggs Billie had left for us. Overall, the property was beautiful, the house was perfect, and Mac & Billie were great hosts. I highly recommend staying here.

A Beautiful and Cozy Getaway

Wow. My sister found Open Ranch while searching for a place to accommodate a group of ladies for my bachelorette party. What a find! We stayed in the larger of the two guesthouses – 8 of us slept incredibly comfortably, could have fit 9 or 10. The house was so much fun to be in, lots of little details in the decorating. The bathroom was a blast – converted buckets acted as sinks and the bathtub was recessed into the floor. The place was super clean. The couple who runs it were helpful and gave us a little background info on the ranch and how they came to run it. Friendly horses. Beautiful sunsets. Peace and quiet. Perfect for an afternoon of wine-tasting. My friends and I all plan on coming down again. I want to spend more time and do more hiking in the hills surrounding the place.

Majestic Getaway Ranch

I was stunned by the beauty of the ranch, the surrounding mountains and the cozy Canelo House. My sister, girl friend and I went to the area to see Kartchner Caverns, and visit the wineries. We spent two nights at the house. The house was straight from a magazine, and had every amenity you could possibly need or want, plus some. Billie had decorated the house so perfect, that we decided to go shopping in Tubac so we could attempt to duplicate some of the unique finds she had discovered, in our own homes. We made a game of trying to find something that Billie didn’t think of. We couldn’t find a thing missing. In fact, there were many extras, like the hiking trails, the firepit outside, the ping pong table, horseshoes, games, books and DVDs. Billie and Mac are such wonderful hosts. They checked on us regularly, brought us lanterns for our evening fireside chats, started fires in the firepit, drew maps of shortcuts to Tubac, and shared with us their very interesting lives. They treated us like royalty! I would definitely recommend visiting this ranch as it’s a great way for a city person to experience the beauty and grace of nature, in first class style. Thank you Billie and Mac! We hope to be back soon.

Excellent Get-away On a Working Cattle Ranch

My husband and I stayed at the Canelo House on the Open Cross Ranch this past weekend and we absolutely loved it. The owners have done an excellent job renovating an historic ranch that has been around since the 1800s. They have the right feel for mixing vintage with modern to create a perfect environment for relaxation. We particularly enjoyed hearing stories about their family experiences working and ranching on the land. Open Cross Ranch made us feel right at home with a basket of fresh fruit and chocolate, as well as a small basket of high quality loofahs and lotions. The bed was cozy and warm in spite of the nip in the air, and the views were absolutely spectacular.

Best Accommodations for a Fantastic Girls Getaway!

A group of 7 girls (ages 24-42) had the most fantastic getaway to the Donaldson’s ranch and would highly recommend staying here. We toured the Sonoita wineries and returned to what felt like home. Billie was fantastic to work with and extremely accommodating. The whole experience from booking to our departure was very amazing and unbelievably simple. We forgot a few small items behind and Billie even mailed them back to us right away with a kind note. If you are considering staying here, whether with family or friends, we would recommend the Donaldson ranch!

Girls getaway weekend success
We had such a great time at Open Cross Ranch with 6 of my girlfriends. Our gateway weekend to Sonoita Wineries was absolutely amazing. The accommodation of the cabin, the location, the owners were absolutely high class!!! I can’t think of anything that was missing in cabin, from kitchen tools to individuals hand made bathroom soaps and little personal things you may forget to grab when you go on a trip:) Billie was so kind that she even mailed my socks to me:) That just shows can much they care about their guests! We definitely coming back here again! Thank you for everything!!!

Ranch House Gem Tucked Away in Southern Arizona
From the moment we arrived at the ranch house to the moment we departed, we found nothing to complain about and everything to marvel at. If you want to truly disconnect and spend a relaxing time with family or friends… this is the place to be. The property is a bit off the beaten path, but well worth the travel to get there. The owners have been attentive to all details of this guesthouse including a fully stocked kitchen that we could not find anything it was missing, other than the food or a private cook! The layout of the house allows families and friends their own privacy as well as a common area to enjoy conversation. If you expect to sit around and watch TV or surf the Internet, this is not the place for you because other than DVD’s there is no cable/satellite or much reception to cell phones. For us, this was a welcome break from electronics and the re-discovery of family interaction that includes conversation and playing games. The sleeps 8 is a bit of a stretch, unless you have lots of little kiddos. I would say this comfortably sleeps 5 adults in the beds and 1-2 extra on the pullout sofa. As far as entertainment not on site, there are wineries within a matter of 20 minutes of the ranch. Who would have thought that Southern Arizona was the prime location for wineries? Since shopping is very limited in the area, you will need to plan on a trip to Sierra Vista to stock the panties. There is a local farmer’s market in Patagonia that contains organic items, but expect to pay a premium. If you have a large family, there is the option to rent the 2nd house located within 500 feet of this house. It too has comfortable accommodations and a darling southern flare in the decor. A few things to consider before booking; (1) ask about monsoon season as the roads leading up to the property are dirt and would wash out easily during heavy rains, (2) consider a 4×4 or AWD vehicle to maneuver the roads, (3) if you need to have telephone access, ask for the phone numbers at the guest houses since there is no cell phone reception, (4) are you stressed out and need a serious vacation where you can truly relax…. book now, you won’t regret it!

The Real Deal

Recent stay was wonderful and the accommodations are excellent. Brought my mountain bike and would recommend future visitors to avail themselves of the trails as they offer a wide range of hills, flats and washes with spectacular vistas and roaming cattle. If you prefer hiking, these trails are great. Owners are both terrific and have thought of everything. I plan to return as often as possible.

Over the Easter weekend, we were invited to spend the holidays with our son’s family and enjoy the Easter egg experience with our 2 year old granddaughter. It turns out our daughter-in-law’s parents live real close to the Open Cross Ranch, and we needed to find a place to stay for the weekend. We were pleasantly surprised when we pulled up to this beautiful ranch. It’s located at the very bottom of the Canelo Hills, which is National Forest Lands, and the views are breathtaking! There are 2 houses that are available to rent, and we stayed in the Canelo House, which accommodates 6 people comfortably. The home is fully furnished, and we were greeted to Easter Candy, fresh eggs from their farm, home-baked cinnamon rolls, and fresh water. The owners, Mac and Billie Donaldson, are friendly people who will do everything possible to make your stay an enjoyable and relaxing one! When we come to visit this area in the future, we are planning on bringing our other 2 grandchildren. They love the ranch-type atmosphere and would enjoy playing in the fields and watching the horses and chickens. This ranch is conveniently located close to Sonoita and within an easy driving distance to Tucson and Patagonia Lake State Park if you like to hike, fish, or just enjoy the views. In fact, after I posted some of my pictures on Facebook of the ranch, the sunset, and mountains nearby, one of my friends who will be coming to Tucson early next year for a niece’s wedding from Hawaii, asked for additional information on these facilities. In addition, if someone has a big group up to 14 people, they could actually rent both homes and have a wonderful experience. My husband and I don’t hesitate a moment in recommending this ranch if you are wanting a relaxing and enjoyable stay in Arizona.

A ranch house in wine country

My friends and I decided to take a last minute trip to the Arizona wine country. We stumbled upon this cozy looking house and booked it. It was a wonderful experience for all of us. The house was full of so many great amenities with a full kitchen and was beautifully decorated and laid out. We received great fresh eggs and cinnamon rolls courtesy of our hosts. It is extremely close to all of the vineyards and not far at all from Tucson itself. The views were picturesque, everything was clean and lovingly cared for. We would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a quiet stay in a great location.

Wonderful experience!

My family and I stayed at the two houses on the ranch over the New Year’s holiday. It was fantastic! My son and nephews loved running around outside, seeing the stars at night, and making smores over the campfire. The decor was a perfect balance of luxury and western flare. I expected some dust because of the area, but both houses were immaculate! The kitchen is fully stocked with dishes and cookware, as well as the bathroom having plenty of towels and emergency toiletries. We even had fresh eggs and muffins waiting for us! The ranch is far enough out of the way to be quiet and relaxing, yet close enough to surrounding cities to be able to take day trip to see the sights. There are also several local wineries in the area. Or, you can just sit on the front porch and enjoy the quiet. I would definitely stay there again and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone who wants the experience of an Arizona ranch, but all the comforts of comfy hotel!

“My family stayed at Open Cross Ranch and had a very enjoyable time. Due to the number of us, we used both guest houses which were fully furnished and VERY comfortable. The Ranch makes for a very quiet get-away. I greatly enjoyed the close proximity to Sonoita – Southern Arizona Wine Country! The owners or Open Cross Ranch made us feel very welcome and made recommendations for day trips to see many of the nearby historic areas.”

This was a perfect location for our extended family to all get together for a vacation. The homes were beautifully furnished with period themed accents. Every possible need had been carefully thought through by the owners and provided for our stay. Everywhere we turned there were thoughtful amenities. We were definitely pampered. The pictures don’t do it justice. The houses were immaculately clean and the kitchens well stocked with cooking paraphernalia. The location is within driving distance of Bisbee and Tumbstone where our family greatly enjoyed visiting. I can’t describe how refreshing it was for our family to unplug from electronics and truly connect with each other. This location far surpassed our expectations and I would highly recommend it to others! You will love it!!

WOW! What a wonderful hideaway ranch yet close to Tombstone, Bisbee, Siearra Vista, and Parker Canyon Lake: Awesome. We cannot say enough about what a wonderful time we had on our fanily Christmas vacation. We have rented VRBO homes from coast to coast and from South Dakota to Mexico and this place was by far the best. The owners Mac and Billie go all out to make your stay very special. It is on a real working ranch with horses grazing right out side your window yet close to lots of interesting places to see and things to do, Old West Tombstone, Copper Queen Mine, Kartchner Caverns, Patagonia, Fort Huachuca, and lots more. We would/will return in a heartbeat.
